He set a record as the first Indian player to win a gold medal in the World Athletics Championship. Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal by throwing the javelin 88.17 meters in the javelin throw final held at Budapest, Hungary.
Due to a foul, Neeraj Chopra did not throw the javelin properly in the first round. In the second round, he not only threw the javelin at a distance of 88.17 meters and jumped into the top place but also secured the gold medal.
Neeraj Chopra threw 86.32, 84.64, 87.73, 83.98 meters in his next attempts. Arshad Nadeem (87.82 meters) from Pakistan won the silver medal, while Jakub Vadlejk (86.67 meters) from the Czech Republic won the bronze medal.
Along with Neeraj Chopra, Indian players Kishore Jena (84.77) finished fifth and DP Manu (84.14) finished sixth in the javelin throw, showing career best performance. After shooter Abhinav Bindra, Neeraj Chopra created the record of being the athlete who won the Olympics as well as the World Championship title.
