JANKRANTI NEWS (DIBRUGARH) : Assam’s Dibrugarh district is prone to erosions each year and the people of Dibrugarh has to face severe flooding and lose of property and agriculture. So in an attempt to save the severe erosion site from further eroding, a protection scheme worth about Rs 75 crore was launched.
The said scheme was launched by Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan in the Mohanaghat area of Dibrugarh. This scheme will help to protect a stretch of 7 km long area from the devastating erosion causing due to the Brahmaputra River.
Through the help of NABARD’s Infrastructure Development Assistance, two spurs of worth Rs 24 crore and Rs 27 crore will be constructed along with the Geo Bags worth Rs 16 crore and Rs 9 crore.
MLA Prasanta Phukan said that the Mohanaghat area has been facing erosion problem and the work to prevent the erosion has been started near the spur number 8 (The Erosion Control Dikes). He further said that after completion of the work, the threat perception from the erosion will be much less.
Dibrugarh has been facing the challenge of soil erosion due to change in the course of river Brahmaputra in the upper stream. Earlier, the current of the river used to hit Dibrugarh’s Rohmoria area but now it directly hits the town.
