JANKRANTI NEWS (ASSAM) : Dr. Purnima Devi Barman who is a prominent figure in the conservation efforts in Assam has been awarded the prestigious Whitley Gold Award for 2024. Dr Devi earned the title of “Green Oscar” and marked a significant achievement not only for herself but also for the whole of Assam on the global conservation arena.
Dr Barman’s exceptional dedication to protect the endangered ‘Hargila’ which is one of the rarest storks in the world made her work to be awarded the prestigious Whitley Gold Award which is one of the highest honors in conservation. Her remarkable efforts in conservation work have inspired the local women in Assam and also attained attention worldwide for the conservation of this species.
Dr. Barman’s journey and work have gained widespread recognition and this prestigious award have added to her impressive list of achievements. Earlier in 2022, Dr Barman was awarded the UN Environment Champions of the Earth Award.
Dr. Barman beyond her role as a conservationist, is also known for her contributions as an entrepreneur, economist, women’s rights activist and a wildlife biologist. Her tireless efforts serves as a ray of hope to exemplify the impact of the grassroots movements in safeguarding the biodiversity in the coming future.
