JANKRANTI NEWS (ASSAM) : As the festival of Rongali Bihu approaches in Assam, the tradition of weaving the traditional assamese gamosa takes center stage which symbolizes a cultural heritage which is deeply rooted in the hearts of the people of Assam

The gamosa which is a handloom cloth with a white background with red stripes on the three sides and floral motifs on the fourth side, holds a significant place in the Assamese culture. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the assamese gamosa possesses a sacred value as a symbol of love, affection and respect.

In the town of Bongaigaon of Assam, women are found to be engrossed in preparations for Bihu by weaving of the gamosa being a focal point. As the days draw closer to the vibrant festival, their hands move deftly, carrying forth the legacy passed down through the generations.

During the celebration of Bihu, the gamosa is commonly gifted to the loved ones as a token of affection and respect. Moreover it is draped around the necks of Bihu dancers which adds to the vibrancy of the festivities. Additionally, the gamosa finds its place of honor on prayer altars during various cultural rituals, emphasizing its spiritual importance.
