New Delhi, March 12, Jankranti News, : —– The BJP government at the Center has taken a crucial decision before the Lok Sabha elections.  The controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) which was approved less than four years ago, has been brought into force from yesterday (11-3-2024).  In this regard, a notification was released on Monday evening.

A spokesperson of the Ministry of Home Affairs said that eligible persons can apply online for Indian citizenship and a web portal has also been prepared for this purpose.  The CAA-2019 Bill (Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019) was approved in the Parliament on December 11, 2019, amid strong protests by the opposition.

It also got the consent of the then President Ram Nath Kovind.  However, due to the concerns of citizens across the country, as well as uncertainty over the full provisions of the law, the implementation of the CAA has not materialized so far.  Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made it clear many times recently that the CAA will be implemented before the Lok Sabha elections.  It is in this order that the Center has recently notified this Act.  After the Center notified the CAA regulations, the police and paramilitary forces were heavily deployed in the sensitive areas of the national capital, Delhi.

“”” What is the CAA —?, “”

CAA Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 was brought to give Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who migrated to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan due to religious violence.  Refugees are given Indian citizenship even if they do not have proper documents.  Only those who arrived before December 31, 2014 are eligible for citizenship.

“”” What are the objections –?,””

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 1955, a new law which amended the Citizenship Act, caused controversy by excluding Muslims.  There were large-scale protests in the North-Eastern states.  The central government says that the Citizenship Amendment Act will be useful for non-Muslims who have migrated to the country due to religious violence in Muslim-dominated countries.  But the opposition criticizes that this law discriminates against Muslims and violates the secular principles of the Constitution.
