Nominations/recommendations for Padma Awards will be received online at the Rashtriya Puraskar portal (https://awards.gov.in).

The Padma Awards are India’s highest civilian award after the Bharat Ratna. These are given in three sections. The Padma Awards were started by the Government of India in 1954. In 1955 it was named Padma Shri, Padmabhushan and Padmavibhushan. Since then, the Padma Awards have been conferred by the President of India every year. Padma awards are given to those who have rendered distinguished service in various fields.

Padma Awards are given for distinguished service in all fields like art, literature, education, sports, medicine, social service, science, engineering, public affairs, civil service, commerce, industry. All people are eligible for these awards irrespective of caste, profession, position, gender. However, government employees working in PSUs except doctors and scientists are not eligible for Padma awards. If this is the case, it seems that the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning to change the Padma awards to ‘People’s Padma’.

Details of this are also available on the Ministry of Home website (https://mha.gov.in) and on the Padma Awards portal (https://padmaawards.gov.in) under the heading ‘Awards and Medals’).

Statutes and rules for these awards are available on the website at the link https://padmaawards.gov.in/AboutAwards.aspx.
