International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated every year on October 11.  The United Nations has announced this International Day of the Girl Child to prevent the rape and abuse of girls and to inform them of their rights.  American civil rights activist Eleanor Roosevelt changed the word “man” to “people” to reflect the equality of men and women in the Declaration of Human Rights signed by 192 countries.  The United Nations recognized October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, the birthday of Eleanor Roosevelt, who fought to protect the self-respect of women.  This day was celebrated worldwide for the first time on October 11, 2012.  The main purpose of this day is to raise awareness about gender inequalities faced by girls worldwide in terms of education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, protection, violence, forced child marriage and discrimination.  The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated to reflect the progress made by girls and young women in their fields of advocacy and research.
United Nations.  The idea of the organization is to make people aware of girls’ education, nutrition, rights, medical care, protection etc. in this form.  “It’s our time.. our rights.. our future” is the theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child.  Both boys and girls are equal.  There should not be any discrimination against girls, as compared to boys.. girls are not less in any way.  They compete equally with boys in all fields.  Achieving ranks.  Getting seats.  Even though lion’s share of IAS, IPS and other services are women’s, disrespect towards girl child in the society is not decreasing.  There are families who prepare for abortion when they find out that the unborn child is a girl.  There is no greater inhumanity than this.
